Arrrrgghhhh! Today I've been planning our September Field Days program, which will be all about pirates. I am so excited about the activities we're going to do. I'm also excited about dressing up as a pirate and coming up with my own pirate name. Does anyone have any suggestions? In the meantime, check out our awesome series of pirate books by Liam O'Donnell that include information on weapons, treasure, pirate rules and more!

Winter break is coming up quick! Stop by the library to get books and movies to keep you from getting bored. We have a lot of awesome new books as well as some oldies but goodies. I think it would be fun to spend an entire day making rubber band cars like the ones you'd find Amazing Rubber Band Cars, and then have drag races with them!

Tips for getting your child ready to read

There are six pre-reading skills that children need to be ready to read:

Print Motivation: being interested in and enjoying books
Vocabulary: knowing the names of things
Print Awareness: noticing print, knowing how to handle a bookand knowing how to follow the words on a page
Letter Knowledge: knowing letters are different from each other, knowing their names and sounds and recognizing letters everywhere
Phonological Awareness: being able to hear and play with the smaller sounds in words
Narrative Skills: being able to describe things and events and tell stories
